The Rediscovery of North America (Thomas D. Clark Lectures)
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Kentucky (July, 1991)
Author: Barry Lopez
Average review score:

Speaks to our times...
As eloquent as it is insightful. Barry Lopez moves us to see and question. A true gift from writer to reader.

The Rediscovery of North America
Time is a precious commodity, and it is hard to find time to do all that must be done. But, the short time that is needed to read this book will be well worth spending.

Very poignant in today's world of rapid development
Extremely good prose. A poignant testimony to the loss of the Earth's resources in the face of historical and current development. Highly recommend adding this to your book collection if you have any affinity to the natural world.

THE book to have re: the beans
For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)

If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

A lifesaver
Renal physiology can be very difficult to truly understand, and yet an understanding of it is essential to understanding so many aspects of physiology, pathology, and pharmacology. Studying diuretics for cardio pharm is nightmarish unless you understand the physiology of the loop of Henle. Vander takes this difficult yet important subject and makes it easy to understand. The book reads extremely quickly, and the flow-charts and diagrams are amazing. I never even opened Berne & Levy for renal phys--I read Vander's book (which is no longer than B&L's renal chapters) and cruised through renal phys. I am writing this review now, a year after I took physiology, because I am now studying for the USMLE Step 1. I have not looked at Vander's book in a year, but I still remember renal phys, and reviewing it now is the easiest part of my studying (the only easy part, in fact). That is because, thanks to Vander, I actually understand renal physiology. A great book!!

Vander on the kidneys.
For any medical student that needs a comprehensive, but easily understood explanation of the structure and function of kidneys, I highly recommend Renal Physiology by Vander. It is very well written, and covers all the basic principles that you will need to know to understand pathologies associated with the kidneys.

The Second Assassination of Maurice Bishop (New International, No 6)
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (December, 1989)
Author: Steve Clark
Average review score:

Heroic Revolutionist, fighter against Stalinism
One day those who have fought against Stalinism from Warsaw to Vladivostok, from Beijing to Hanoi, and beyond will realize in the Caribbean there has not only been the struggle Fidel and the Cuba revolutionists have led against Moscow-oriented bureaucrats to strangle their revolution, but that in Grenada Maurice Bishop the leader of that country's revolution was a heroic fighter against Stalinism. When they do, people will need this book, because this book provides a revolutionary Marxist analysis of Bishop's struggle for the Grenadian revolution, and how that revolution was defeated by the Cord faction. In the end, we find that Stalinism in Grenada and US imperialism had the same enemy, Bishop and the revolutionary power of Grenadian working people. This will open the door to the precious lessons we can learn from Bishop and his struggle have to teach us.

Long Live the Grenadian Revolution!
This issue of New International tells the story of how the deep-going and popular revolution which came to power in Grenada in 1979, led by Maurice Bishop, was destroyed from within by a Stalinist faction within the ruling New Jewel Movement. When the US invaded Grenada in October of 1983, the revolution was already dead at the hands of Bernard Coard and his associates. This is extremely important to understand because you can easily get the idea that any small country that dares to defy the power of the American empire will always go down to defeat. The invasion of Grenada was certainly a big blow to the liberation struggle in Grenada, but learning the lessons of how the defeat could have been avoided, and understanding the deadly role of Stalinism within Grenada, will make it more possible to succeed the next time around.

Aside from the title article on Grenada, the issue has a fantastic piece on the sordid history of US government spying and disruption campaigns against labor, civil rights and revolutionary movements; and how, with the right strategy, we can defeat and expose such efforts, as was done in a landmark lawsuit won by the Socialist Workers Party against the FBI in 1987.

Fighting for rights: Grenada and the U.S.
Part of the classic New International series, this book contains several articles that are extremely valuable for anyone attracted to a revolutionary perspective.
The Second Assassination of Maurice Bishop tells the full story of the Grenada revolution, which burst on the scene in 1979 and opened up a new world of hope and change for the Grenadian people. The article explains how the revolutionary leadership placed itself at the service of the masses, and did everything in its power to make them the masters of their own destiny. The betrayal and downfall of the revolution is explained in a blow-by-blow account of the battle within the leadership, which culminated in the 1983 victory of the Stalinist Bernard Coard faction and the assassination of Bishop and his comrades. The U.S. then invaded the island and obliterated the remains of the Grenadian revolution. A sad story, but such a valuable lesson for revolutionaries!
Another article in the book, The 50-Year Domestic Contra Operation, reviews the history of the U.S. government assault on the democratic rights of working people at home and abroad, dating back to World War I. It explains how democratic rights have been won by workers and their unions fighting against the bosses and their politicians in office. This government looks after the needs of the wealthy rulers, and in doing so has repeatedly sought to strip the workers of their rights, and is doing so even more in the twenty-first century.

See and Spy Counting (Baby Einstein Books)
Published in Board book by Hyperion Press (October, 2001)
Authors: Julie Aigner-Clark, Nadeem Zaidi, and Baby Einstein Company
Average review score:

Clever teaching too!
Julie Aigner-Clark is a genius! Her inventive products, exceptionally creative, are designed to entertain children while they learn. "See and Spy Counting," is no exception. With an imaginative approach, this nifty little board book teaches numbers and counting through "seeing and spying" an object, and counting "how many" of those items appear in the picture. Each page features a different animal in an appropriate setting, such as a COW on a farm, and the text reads, "How many BARNS do you see? = 1. How many EARS does the cow have? = 2." and so forth.

This book counts from one to five, seven separate times; aptly applying repetition to reinforce learning. The colorful images are simply illustrated, and highly contrasted to the background, creating emphasis to stimulate babies interest, while providing preschoolers with supplementary lessons on colors, animals and everyday objects such as fish, flowers, and eyes. Children and parents alike will enjoy this clever teaching tool! Birth and up.

Buy this book
This is a great book for young readers. I bought this for my two year old and she loves it. There were simple questions that challenged my daughter to really look at all the bright pictures. This book is kind of like the "I Spy" books, but is made for much younger children.

Nice book
THis is a cute book. It has some of the favorite characters from the baby einstein series in it. What I liked best was the bright vibrant colors in the book. My son enjoyed looking at all the pictures. It is a very nice book. If your child loves the baby einstein products they will love this

Sos Help for Emotions: Managing Anxiety, Anger, and Depression
Published in Paperback by Parents Pr (January, 2002)
Author: Lynn Clark
Average review score:

I highly recommend this book...
For once, I have chosen a book based on other people's reviews, and I am very pleased with that decision. At the time I purchased it, I was going through a horrible break up that I was so depressed over, and always thinking the worst things "It's all my fault" "if only I was a better girlfriend" - well, after reading the book, I brought my emotions in order, and realized 'it wasn't me - I am not the one with the problem'. This is a light-hearted book, written in language that most normal people can understand, and doesn't make you feel like you are reading a college-level psychology textbook. The first 30 pages will make a difference, a notable difference, and you will start to feel better......I did.

Changed my life and helped me recover from eating disorder
I came across this book and bought it because it looked interesting. This book changed my life and is a permanent part of my favorite books ( I have so many books that I pack away the ones that I didn't like that much). I am not packing this one away!! This book teaches you how to manage your emotions- something that was never taught to me in life but is the most important part of a healthy mind and life.

I refer back to the book when I feel down or when I need a reminder of the principles. I have read it over and over and I can say I would have never gotten over my overeating without it. I now know how to live life without turning to food to manage my emotions. Because life is all about how you handle it, not what happens to you. The book teaches you how to handle anything-you have the power. You don't have to feel helpless anymore.

I read a review on a book once(that Im going to say for this one because its so true): I would pay $1,000 for this book. It's that wonderful. And it changed my life forever. I am forever in debt to Lynn Clark. I consider him an angel on earth.

A great help for my clients!
Of all the cognitive therapy workbooks I have attempted to use with clients, this one has made the most sense and motivated them to improve their lives. The humor, cartoons, and informal style make this enjoyable, non-threatening, and applicable to many situations. Richard Costa, MSW, LCSW

The Soviet Manned Space Program
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (November, 1988)
Author: Phillip Clark
Average review score:

Phillip Clark's amazing book.
I am fascinated by the Russian and former Soviet crewed space program; I love the Soyuz spacecraft and can remember being in France in the summer of 1975 when Apollo 18 and Soyuz 19 docked in space.
This book is the best of its kind that I have seen in English, and it is my sincere hope that Phillip Clark will write a revised and updated edition.
I hope to someday learn how to read Russian but in the meantime I think Mr. Clark's book is the best reference on this subject that I will be able to find.
It is also my sincere hope that the United States of America and the Russian Republic will go hand in hand to Mars; I am also glad for the International Space Station where Americans and Russians are learning to work together in preparation for the long and arduous journey to Mars.
I would even recommend this book to any layperson.

SUPERB Soviet space flight review !
Hardcover book with almost 200 pages, great photos and drawingcomparable with those seen in Russian language books on this subject! The book covers all soyuz missions up to the first launches to the MIR space station! A must for each serious space flight enthusiast. An updated version would be welcome by the turn of the Millennium 2001 !

The definitive study but needs updating!
Although now out of print and seriously in need of a revised edition, this is the best history in English of the Soviet manned space program up to the late 1980's. It was published in 1988, just as the first of the glasnost revelations about the Soviet space program was coming out, but since then much new material has been released. Phillip Clark is a well-known analyst of the Soviet space program who is a consultant for the European aerospace industry, and his studies are highly regarded in the field. Overall, the histories of the Vostok, Voskhod, and Soyuz programs in this book are the best available in English (and I've read most of the ones that are available), and the history of the Salyut and early phases of the Mir programs are excellent. The coverage of the Soviet manned lunar N-1/L3 and L-1 (Zond) programs was good based on the very limited information available at the time (The Soviets did not formally admit to having a manned lunar landing program until after the book was published), but are now very outdated and are in error in some places, now that the Russians have released many formerly classified details about these programs. Overall, the book is fairly scholarly, but is also written for the general reader, which is in itself quite an accomplishment. It is profusely illustrated with photographs, many in color, diagrams, and details of the spacecraft and launch systems. Despite this book being seriously out of date, it still should be considered an essential book for any serious enthusiast of Soviet space history. One can only hope that the author revises this superb book to incorporate all the new information released by the Russians. Mr Clark, are you listening???

SSS
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (06 September, 2000)
Authors: Captain J. W. Clark, J. W. Clark, and Warren G. Leback
Average review score:

The US merchant marine in World War II
Captain Clark has written an excellent book of his adventures as a ship's officer just prior to and then during WWII. It is an accurate description of the typical mariners life. The book is enhanced by his descriptions of the history of the various places he visited and the seas he sailed. He has played down the dangers and violence to which the US merchant mariner was exposed. They suffered the second highest casualty rate after the US marine corps. Having seen the historical official documentation of the sinking of his vessel in the north Atlantic, I can tell you he understated the danger to himself and the actions he took to save others. Anyone interested in life at sea will enjoy this book.

SSS, Chronologic log of adventure of a young captian in war.
This book was historicaly accurate of war at sea and spans 2-3 years. It is well writen from real time notes and the later memories of Capt Clark. This book was well writen and researched over a period that spaned 50+ years. The adventures of the young Captain during WWII. I found to be spell- binding. The author was able to totally draw me into the events as they happened. I found myself living a part of each event as it was being so vividly described. Spellbinding.

Round-the-world adventures at sea during World War II
"SSS" was the Radio call meaning "under submarine attack" a call heard much too frequently on merchant ships during World War II. Captain Clark has written an outstanding 500+ page memoir of his war years.

The book is not just a memoir -- it's a lesson in history geography, local customs and navigation, because Clark annotates his voyages with brief explanations about the discovery of an island, the island's geography, climate, etc. He explains the war situation at that point in time, which helps us understand why his ship is going somewhere. There's never too much explanation to get in the way of the main story, and it adds plenty of flavor.

Clark seems to have acquaintances, mostly young women, in every port, so we get a glimpse of wartime civilian life in San Francisco, Wellington NZ, Melbourne, AU, etc.

Clark received his training in the Cadet Corps, class of 1940.

On Pearl Harbor day he is Second Mate on an Army Transport, USAT J. W. McAndrew. Besides the Army Transport, he sailed on "merchant" ships, such as the DelBrasil carrying a SeaBees construction battalion to the South Pacific, and was Captain of the XAPA Young America, a Navy Attack Troop Transport which had 89 merchant mariners and 145 Navy personnel and carried up to 2,000 troops for amphibious operations.

What a unique combination! It gives the reader varied perspectives on the war effort.

Clark is torpedoed in the North Atlantic, survives the Murmansk Run, transits the Indian Ocean, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and countless islands in the Pacific.

This is a wonderful book. Don't miss it!

this book is great
dr. braddock was able to utilize her own experiences of battling (and surviving!) this disease to help others in a similar situation. she saw a need for a simple, easy to understand text to inform and inspire both those living with breast cancer and their loved ones. as a woman (and as her daughter) i am so proud to see someone turning her own life experience into such a positive and constructive resource.

updated regularly - last one just out
this book has been the most satisfying effort of my life - we update its content every year or so as new information come out, and that last update was just accomplished. Over 30,000 copies have been sold throughout the country, and we hear from so many women whom it has helped cope with the diagnosis. Thank you, all of you. Wishing you peace and joy.

excellent, concise, humorous at times
recently updated, this small book gives hope and practical, simple-to-read information to all who are confronted with this terrible disease. Patients, family members, friends will all benefit from reading this work.

Strange fruit : alchemy, religion and magical foods : a speculative history
Published in Hardcover by Bloomsbury (1995)
Author: Clark Heinrich
Average review score:

The master key to many doors...
This book came to me at a time when I had been trying desperately to crack the alchemical code. Having read Artephius, I eventually concluded that the secret fire of the alchemists' was no fire at all, but rather an acid. But like most things in regards to alchemy, stripping away one veil only revealed another. It wasn't until I read Heinrich's work that I learned the acid was actually "stomach acid". This book will give you the key to most of the great religious mysteries of the ages. It's hard to believe so many mystery traditions (Gnosticism, Alchemy, Hermeticism, The Grail mythology... and yes, even Christianity if you strip away the silly superstitious nonsense) can all stem from a common stream, but Heinrich's case is air tight. I can't thank him enough for writing this book. It is priceless to any true seeker.

Innovative evidence for Christian entheogen tradition
When I read about eating bittersweet scrolls followed by seeing visions, in Ezekiel and Revelation, it was clear that Christianity included an essential entheogen tradition. However, it was unclear which entheogens might be allegorized in those scriptures. Heinrich presents a fine and sufficient candidate.

He also presents a brilliant hypothesis that the story of the Exodus is based around ergot poisoning of the yeast supply. Chris Bennett in Sex, Drugs, Violence and the Bible makes a case for cannabis especially in the Old Testament, and Dan Merkur in Mystery of Manna, and in Psychedelic Sacrament, makes a case for ergot in the Old Testament.

This is a model of a fine book. The prose is clear, artistic, and masterful. The photos are stunning and perfectly support his case, showing the shape-shifting Amanita in its various lifecycle stages, explaining how each stage is allegorized in Hindu, Christian, and alchemical traditions. Definitely worth the price. A must-have for entheogen scholars.

For those who want to be in the know
Bottom line: the fly Agaric mushroom is the basis for much of the world's religions and symbolism due to its hallucinatory effects. After reading this I found myself seeing the mushroom represented in works of art and in story illustrations I otherwise would not think twice about. Example: that red and white mushroom shown in fairy tales at the bottom of trees with a little gnome sitting on it. (Go check your old story books.)

Read this to be "in the know".

Syncrometer Science Laboratory Manual
Published in Plastic Comb by New Century Press (December, 2000)
Author: Hulda Regehr Clark
Average review score:

It Works
My paradigm of science has been expanded. I bought the syncrometer. I bought the video by Carmen Myers. I bought the Syncrometer Science Manual. I sat down one afternoon with all of the above. After three hours of practice, it worked.I will never, NEVER be the same again!!

A technical guide packed with explanations and tips
Syncrometer Science Laboratory Manual is a college-level manual with a plastic comb binding which will find its audience with students interested in making a Syncrometer and devising experiments for its use. These biology students will receive a thorough grounding in experimental procedures using syncrometry, from plate-zapping to new techniques for cancer therapy. A technical guide packed with explanations and tips on applying the syncrometer to research.

The tide is turning!
I was astonished when I saw this manual available from Amazon. Fantastic! For all the skeptics out there who view Hulda Clark's theories as "unscientific" and "quackery," I invite you to check out her latest publication. This is science way beyond its time. This independant scientist has bypassed the normal route of dicovery and handed the results to you personally. No medical journal time lag involved here! She is not motivated by peer recognition nor financial gain. (Clearly the great power above would not have allowed her tremendous success in cancer, aids, etc. if she was motivated by greed.) Anybody familiar with biochemistry and physics can truly appreciate this entire book. It is basically broken down into 3 sections: 1. Basic syncrometer testing: This section contains 30 experiments in basic syncrometer testing. It is a companion section on her 3 books, "Cure for All Cancers," "Cure for Hiv/Aids," and "The Cure for All Diseases."

2. Syncrometer Biochemistry testing: This section contains 62 experiments in advanced biochemical testing with the syncrometer. This is not for the beginner. Nor can one use household products to make testing samples, but with a few hundred dollars in specimen, tissue and substance slides the possibilities are endless!

3. Geometabolism: This 3rd section of 16 experiments undoubtedly qualifies Dr. Clark for a Noble prize in various categories.(Of course she deserved a Noble prize in medicine with her very first Cancer book!) This section involves the effect of the earth's(or outer space) magnetic field on the timing of our metabolism. It would be a great discovery in modern science if she or other syncrometer operator was able to perform these experiments in a space environment outside of the earths atmosphere. This would bring us major steps closer to piecing together many questions of our existence. Are we really connected to our universe? Is there an ultimate "force" that brings us all together? Is there really something to Ayurvedic medicine's philosophy of our health being connected with the cosmos?(Ayurveda is the oldest form of medicine originating from India and spawning nutritional and exercise(yoga) guidelines.)

This book is years ahead of its time for those who can look past its basic ingredient, the syncrometer. Although rather elementary in its design compared to todays technology, its use involves the most sensitive, fool proof machine existing. Our own senses. This device is more sensitive than ELISA immunology testing, is cheap, quick and user frendly. So what is the catch? Well ask any musician if their instrument is difficult to use and you will most likely get a quick, "No!" The reason for this confident answer is that they have PRACTICED long hours. The syncrometer will initially require a few hours of practice much like a musical instrument. It is a blend of hand eye coordination, sensitive listening and concentration to blend the two together. In 6 months of daily practice one can become a saviour to ailing family members and friends. Good luck and God bless!
